Our Home Office Setup: Everything on Our Desk (Under $500)

We built a full home office setup for under $500. Here is every product on our desk, what each one costs, and what actually made us more productive.

Home office desk setup with ergonomic chair and monitor

Why We Built a Budget Home Office

We work from home most of the week, and for a long time we just used whatever was lying around. A wobbly kitchen chair, a laptop on the table, cables everywhere. It worked, but it was not great for our backs or our focus.

So we set out to build a proper home office for under $500. Not a flashy YouTube setup with RGB lights and a standing desk, just a functional workspace that makes it easier to get things done. Here is everything we picked and what it actually cost.

The Full Setup

1. MSI PRO MP243XP 24-Inch Monitor ($127.92)

This was the single biggest upgrade for productivity. Going from a 14-inch laptop screen to a 24-inch IPS monitor changed how we work. We can have a document and a browser side by side without squinting. The 100Hz refresh rate is smooth, and the built-in speakers are fine for video calls.

The downside: The built-in speakers are just okay. You will want external speakers or headphones for music or anything where audio quality matters. The stand is solid but takes up some desk space.

2. Seenda Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo ($37.97)

We went with this combo because it connects to multiple devices over Bluetooth and USB. Switching between the laptop and a tablet is easy. The keys are quiet and low-profile, and the mouse feels good for daily use.

The downside: The mouse is a bit small if you have larger hands. Battery life is great on the keyboard, but the mouse needs charging more often than we expected.

3. Amazon Basics 6-Sheet Shredder ($34.99)

We did not think we needed a shredder until tax season hit and we had a pile of old bank statements and junk mail with personal info on it. This one is small, handles credit cards, and fits under the desk.

The downside: Six sheets at a time is the limit, so if you have a big stack of documents, it takes a while. It is also a little loud.

4. Kuyal Clear Chair Mat ($29.56)

If you have hardwood or tile floors, a chair mat makes a surprising difference. Rolling around is smoother, and you stop worrying about scratching the floor. The clear design means it does not look weird in your room.

The downside: It can slide around on very smooth floors. We put a thin rug pad under ours and that fixed it.

5. MROCO Ergonomic Mouse Pad with Gel Wrist Rest ($9.99)

After a few weeks of heavy mouse use, our wrist started aching. This gel wrist rest pad fixed that within a few days. The surface is smooth for tracking and the base does not slide.

The downside: The gel pad picks up dirt and oils from your wrist over time. You need to wipe it down every week or so.

6. Tonmom Adjustable Laptop Stand ($7.58)

For under $8, this is probably the best value item on the desk. It raises the laptop screen to eye level, which fixed our neck pain from looking down all day. It folds flat, so you can toss it in a bag if you work from a coffee shop.

The downside: It is plastic, so it does not feel premium. But for the price, it does exactly what it needs to do and has held up for months.

The Total Cost

ItemPrice
MSI PRO 24-Inch Monitor$127.92
Seenda Keyboard and Mouse Combo$37.97
Amazon Basics Shredder$34.99
Kuyal Chair Mat$29.56
MROCO Mouse Pad with Wrist Rest$9.99
Tonmom Laptop Stand$7.58
Total$248.01

That is $248.01. Well under $500 and we still have room to add things like an ergonomic chair or a desk lamp later.

What Made the Biggest Difference

If we had to rank these by impact on our daily work, it would go: monitor first (by far), then the laptop stand, then the mouse pad. The monitor gave us real screen space to work with, the stand fixed our posture, and the wrist rest stopped the aching. Everything else is nice to have but those three were the ones that changed how our workday actually feels.

Bottom Line

You do not need to spend $2,000 on a home office. Under $250 got us a setup we are genuinely happy with. Start with a monitor and a laptop stand if you are on a tight budget. Add the rest as you go.

5.0

"Works like a champ! I love this stand and take it everywhere with me. It's really easy to fold, lightweight, and holds my laptop steady. The design is simple but smart, and I like that it can even hold my phone if needed. It feels a little cheap at first, but it's been surprisingly sturdy and perfect for the height I need. Definitely worth it for the price."

seenda Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse Combo (SKM64-3)

"Works well and looks nice Really like this keyboard and mouse combo. Easy to connect and switch between devices, and the size is perfect. The USB port works great, and the keyboard brightness is just right, not too bright at night. The keys are quiet and soft to type on, which I really like. The mouse works well but feels a bit too flat for my style. Only complaint."
