Our Travel Tech Packing List

We travel a few times a month for work and have gone through a lot of trial and error with what to pack. Too much tech and your bag weighs a ton. Too little and you are stuck without something you need at the worst time.

This is the list we have settled on. Everything here fits in a single organizer pouch and covers basically every tech situation we run into on the road.

The Packing List

1. Twelve South AirFly SE ($34.97) - For Airplane Audio

This is the item that gets the most questions when people see us use it. The AirFly SE is a Bluetooth transmitter that plugs into any 3.5mm headphone jack. Plug it into the airplane seat, pair your AirPods, and you can watch the in-flight movie without using those terrible wired earbuds they hand out.

We also use it at hotel gyms that have older treadmills with aux jacks. The battery lasts over 20 hours, so we charge it once before a trip and forget about it.

The downside: There is a slight audio delay, maybe half a second. It is not noticeable for movies, but if you tried to use it for gaming, you would notice. Also, pairing can be finicky the first time. After that initial setup, it reconnects quickly.

2. ProtoArc XKM01 Foldable Keyboard and Mouse ($64.99) - For Working on the Go

When we need to get real work done from a hotel room or airport lounge, typing on a laptop keyboard just does not cut it, especially on smaller machines. This foldable keyboard is full-sized when unfolded and comes with its own carrying case and a compact mouse.

It connects over Bluetooth to up to three devices, so we can switch between a laptop, tablet, and phone without re-pairing. The keys feel surprisingly good for a folding keyboard.

The downside: The fold creates a slight bump in the middle of the keyboard that takes a day to get used to. The mouse is functional but very basic. If you are picky about your mouse, bring your own and just use the keyboard.

3. FYY Large Travel Cable Organizer ($16.99) - For Keeping Everything Tidy

Before we had this, our chargers and cables lived in a tangled mess at the bottom of our backpack. The FYY organizer has two layers with elastic straps and mesh pockets. We keep chargers, cables, the AirFly, the USB drive, and adapters all in one place.

It is waterproof, which has saved us when a water bottle leaked in our bag once. And the hand strap makes it easy to pull out at security.

The downside: "Large" is accurate. If you are packing light with just a small daypack, this might take up more room than you want. They make a smaller version, but it does not fit as much.

4. Amazon Basics USB-C/USB-A 256GB Flash Drive ($19.99) - For File Transfers

Cloud storage is great until the hotel Wi-Fi is terrible, which happens more often than you would think. We keep this 256GB drive loaded with important files, presentations, and a backup of our current projects.

The dual USB-C and USB-A ports mean it works with basically any device. Transfer speeds are fast enough that moving a big presentation takes seconds.

The downside: The swivel cap does not lock, so it can open in your bag. We just keep it in the cable organizer and it is fine. Also, 256GB might be overkill for most people, but the price difference from 128GB was small enough that we went bigger.

5. CloudValley Webcam Cover Slide ($6.99 for 2-Pack) - For Privacy

This is a tiny thing, but we put one on every laptop we own. It is a thin metal slide that covers your webcam when you are not using it. Hotel Wi-Fi networks are not always secure, and we would rather have a physical cover than trust software alone.

It takes two seconds to install and does not interfere with closing the laptop lid.

The downside: On some laptops, the cover adds just enough thickness that you can feel a slight pressure when you close the lid. We have not had any screen damage, but it is worth checking your specific laptop model. On MacBooks, it works perfectly.

How We Pack It

Everything except the keyboard goes into the FYY organizer. The keyboard and its case go in the laptop compartment of our backpack, right next to the laptop. At airport security, we just pull out the organizer and toss it in the bin. No digging around for loose cables.

Bottom Line

We have been traveling with this exact kit for about six months and have not needed to swap anything out. The AirFly is the standout if you fly a lot. The cable organizer is the item you did not know you needed until you have one. Start with those two and add the rest based on how you travel.
